Updating Your Templates

The first time you launch ScreenSteps on a computer a Templates folder is created. You can then update and modify those templates as you wish. If you would like to restore the factory default templates or would like to update your templates because ScreenSteps introduced a new template feature, this lesson will show you how.

The Defaults Folder

Every time you launch ScreenSteps the Defaults folder is filled with the latest factory versions of the templates. You can copy any of the templates from the Defaults folder into the ./Templates/HTML or ./Templates/PDF folders. This is useful if you need to get back to square one after modifying a template or to take advantage of new features we've added to templates since you first installed ScreenSteps.

The lesson "The ScreenSteps Templates Folder" will show you how to locate the Defaults folder on your computer.

Update Templates Using Defaults

For example, version 2.0.3 of ScreenSteps introduced a new template feature for viewing larger versions of a step image in situations where the step image must be resized to fit in the available space. To take advantage of this export feature you need to replace your existing templates with the templates in the Defaults folder. Here is what you do:

1) Open the ./Templates/Defaults/HTML/Lesson folder in the ScreenSteps template directory.
2) Select all of the folders in that directory.
3) Copy those folders into the ./Templates/HTML/Lesson folder.

Replace Existing Folders

When trying to copy the folders from ./Templates/Defaults/Lesson to ./Templates/HTML/Lesson you will be asked if you want to replace existing folders. Go ahead and replace the folders.

You can now repeat the same steps for topics using the ./Templates/Defaults/Topic folder.

Export

The next time you export a lesson or topic the new templates will be used.
