Description

Learn how to customize the Mac OS X keyboard shortcut for capturing images to the clipboard. The default shortcut is cmd-ctrl-shift-4 which is far too difficult. I like to set it to cmd-shift-3.



You can use this funciton with the clipboard recorder in ScreenSteps to quickly add images to a lesson.

Changing the Keyboard Shortcut For Screen Captures on Mac OS X

Open System Preferences

Open Keyboard & Mouse

Select Keyboard Shortcuts Tab

Find Screen Shots Section

We are now going to set the keyboard shortcut for "Save picture of screen as a file" with the one for "Copy picture of selected area to the clipboard".

Select "Save picture of screen as a file"

Change the Shortcut

Click on the shortcut and press cmd-ctrl-shift-4 on your keyboard.

You should now see little yellow warnings because two commands have the same shortcut.

Change Shortcut for "Copy picture of selected area to the clipboard"

Click on the shortcut area and press cmd-shift-3.

Now you can turn on the clipboard recorder in ScreenSteps. Whenever you hit cmd-shift-3 you will get a little crosshair. Drag over the area you want to capture and the image will be imported into ScreenSteps.

HINT: After pressing cmd-shift-3 you can press the spacebar. The capture mode will then let you select an entire window to capture.
