Using the Capture Tool
Shows you how to use the capture tool.
Select a Delay
Select a delay setting. You should only need to use a delay setting if you need to capture a menu. If not, Instant Capture should work fine.
Select Capture
Select Capture. The ScreenSteps window will disappear. If you set a delay the counter will start. As soon as your cursor turns into a cross-hair you can capture your image.
Tip: On Mac OS X press the space bar after you see the cross-hair to capture a window.
Captured Image
A new step will be created from the captured image.

For the life of me, I can not capture a menu selection (OS X 10.4.11).

Dave-
The key with capturing menus is to just click on them to activate them. Don't click and hold. If you click and hold, as soon as you release the mouse the menu disappears. If you just click and release to activate the menu it will stay visible until you click somewhere else.

I found out my problem. When doing a timed capture, once you get the cross hairs you MUST move the mouse before clicking. If you click without first moving the mouse the capture will fail.

Every time I try to capture the menu the count down stop.
Cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong.

That is because ScreenSteps is the front most app. This usually happens if you are trying to grab the System Preferences menu on the Mac. To avoid this, just click on the desktop after you activate the timer so that ScreenSteps is no longer the front app and you should be fine.

How do you capture a browser window that you have to scroll to display all the content?
bmls July 07, 2008 05:48
ScreenSteps doesn't have a way to capture an image that is not currently being displayed. This would be the case with a web page that you need to scroll to see. Depending on your OS there are other screen capture applications that can do this. Once you have one of those applications you can integrate it with ScreenSteps by using the Clipboard recorder. See this lesson:
Using the Clipboard Recorder.

Two questions:
1. When I see the cross hairs after clicking capture, then I click once with the left mouse button. Screen Steps comes back front but the image isn't showing. What do I need to do so the image is displayed?
2. How can I trim or crop with this feature?
Trevor DeVore September 23, 2008 13:21
To capture an image you need to press the mouse button down, drag the mouse to define the region to capture and then release the mouse. It sounds like you are pressing the mouse button down and releasing immediately.
If you click on an image then the image tools appear at the top of the ScreenSteps window. One of the tools is the crop tool. Take a look at Cropping Images in the online manual for more information.
