Creating a Lesson

Learn how to create a lesson using ScreenSteps 2.

Select New Lesson

To create a new Lesson, click on the New Lesson button.

Edit Lesson Title

A new lesson will be created and opened for editing. Click on the lesson title to edit it.

Capture Images/Create Steps

There are several ways to create new steps:
    1) Click New Step - this creates a blank step.
    2) Click Capture (you can also open the Capture Palette by clicking on the arrow next to the camera).
    3) Turn on the Clipboard Recorder (with the Clipboard Recorder on, any image you place on the system clipboard will be added to your ScreenSteps lesson).

Add Some Text

Here you can see that I have captured an image. A step has been created. You can add a step title (1) and/or step instructions (2). Just click on the fields to edit them.

Annotate Images

Select an image by clicking on it.

You will see the image annotation tools appear in the toolbar. Select the tool you want to use and draw on the image.

Adjust Annotations

Open the Inspector palette to adjust the color, thickness and other annotation parameters.

Here I have used the rectangle tool.

Saving and Other Stuff

Don't worry about saving. All of your changes are saved as you make them. Some additional things you might want to do are:

1. Export the lesson to HTML, PDF, to your own blog, or to ScreenSteps Live
2. Add tags
3. Enter a description for the lesson
4. Go back to the Lesson Library (that is where you can see all of the lessons you have created)

I see how simple it looks. Are the steps auto numbered?

Greg DeVore January 22, 2008 19:48

The steps are not auto-numbered. The lesson format looks pretty much exactly like the lesson you see above since it was created using ScreenSteps.

About 1990 Mac users had an easy Simple Text file edition software for tutorial documents. Eighteen years after, ScreenSteps give me more and more power under OSX.

Is it possible to rearrange the steps within a lesson?

Is it possible to move a step from one lesson to another lesson?

bmls April 23, 2008 19:45

Yes. You can drag reorder steps in a lesson or you can select Lesson > Step > Move Up/Move Down.

You can move a step from one lesson to another by selecting the step, copying it, then loading the new lesson and pasting the step in.

I want to make several similar lessons. Is it possible to copy a lesson and then change it?

bmls May 09, 2008 05:58

Yes it is. See this lesson:
